Casemate Introduction

• A guide to the wide variety of vehicles used by the US Army during the Battle of Normandy
• An invaluable resource for military vehicle enthusiasts

During the Battle of Normandy, the US Army used a striking array of different vehicles for various purposes, from motorcycles to tanks. Many of them survived the war to either continue service within different armies or to become the pride of their civilian owners. Several have been preserved, to be offered a new lease of life thanks to enthusiastic collectors who regularly revive them during commemorative events. Others have regrettably been less fortunate – hence this US army depository following the ruthless battles of 1944.

This guide offers you an introduction to the many vehicles used by the Americans during the Battle of Normandy, illustrated by a number of hitherto unpublished photographs, from jeeps to Sherman tanks, whilst not forgetting trucks and other specialised heavy vehicles.

The Book

It's only a small book at 48 pages, and does not pretend to be an exhaustive treatment, but it does provide a handy full-colour guide to the sort of vehicles that could be seen being used by the Americans during the battle for Normandy in 1944, along with some useful if a little general information about those vehicles.

As mentioned, the book is in full colour, and is divided into different sections such as light vehicles, moderate tonnage vehicles, reconnaissance vehicles etc. Each of the sections contains a varying number of vehicles, and presents the information n a sort of 'datafile' manner, including full colour photographs of restored examples, along with some period photographs...in colour where possible...and one or two short paragraphs on where the vehicle would have been found, used by and what for.

Conclusion

Weirdly...this book will probably appeal more to Axis modellers. That's probably why I like it so much. I really don't want to know the ins and outs of all the different types of Sherman there were since I don't model them that much. I would like some basic information on Allied vehicles though, so that at least I can recognise the things on dioramas! That's exactly what's on offer in this title...good basic information, with some excellent photographs to use as a sort of guide book of US vehicle types. Recommended.

My thanks to CASEMATE PUBLISHING for the review sample.
